The latest film by Julian Schnabel is a sensual story about the most fruitful and at the same time the most dramatic period in the life of Vincent Van Gogh (Willem Dafoe). The painter is looking for a new place to live. At the urging of a friend, he leaves Paris for Arles, Provence. There, fascinated by the riot of colors and the play of light, the underrated artist creates his most famous paintings. There, wandering the picturesque fields, carrying an easel, brushes and paints, he gradually goes insane, and at the same time he gains confidence that the meaning of his life is art. The film reveals the secret of his mysterious death and presents as a man of flesh and blood, full of contradictions, supported by his beloved brother and friend Paul Gauguin, with whom he fell into a lethal conflict at the end of his life. He talks about a man who accepts his own destiny and, despite all obstacles, walks his path to the end. Mads Mikkelsen, Emmanuelle Seigner, Oscar Isaac and Rupert Friend were in the cast. Willem Dafoe in the main role created the most outstanding creation in his career. He did not play Van Gogh so much as he became it, but he deservedly received the award for Best Actor at the Venice Festival and an Oscar nomination.
